There is no such thing as “I have a bad hand at cooking rice”. If it doesn't work out for you, it's simply because there is a step in the technique that has failed. Don't worry, right now you're going to learn.
Ingredients
- Rice
- 2 tablespoons of oil for each cup of rice
- 1 cup round grain white rice
- 2 and a half cups of water
- 5 g. of salt
My mum tells me that white rice is like an omelette, everyone at home prepares it in a different way. It depends on many variables, the type of water and especially the variety of rice that we use. I have been wondering what your family does with white rice. It is not the same to prepare white basmati rice than bomba rice. It is true that there are many types of rice and ways to prepare it. I have also told you about the most common mistakes when cooking rice.
But today we are going to stick to white rice as an accompaniment or garnish. The white rice that accompanies some fried eggs or that is then served for a rice salad. There are two ways to cook it, both valid, it depends a bit on how you want the grain to be, whether it is a little caked or loose. With either of the two methods, you will have an excellent white rice, with a perfect grain and at its point.
Cook white rice so that it is compact
Add two tablespoons of oil for every cup of rice that you are going to use. The oil is the ingredient that will help the rice not stick.
Heat the casserole and add the oil, as soon as we see that it is hot, add the rice and stir for about a minute at medium heat to toast the rice.
Pour 2 and a half cups of water for each cup of rice, leave over high heat for 4 minutes until it gets very hot and starts to bubble. Add salt and then lower the heat to medium for about 12 minutes with the lid of the casserole on.
When we see that there is almost no water and small holes begin to remain between the rice grains, we lower the temperature to at least three minutes or simply turn off the heat.
Let it rest with the lid on or with a cotton cloth for about 5 minutes. While it rests, the rice will absorb the rest of the water and you should have it at its point and the grains separated. We can try the rice at rest to see how it is turning out, I like it to be a little hard.
Cook white rice so that it is loose
We wash the amount of rice that we are going to use to remove starch. We can do it in a large bowl or directly in a strainer, two or three times is more than enough. If we don't wash all that starch that the rice grains have attached to it, during cooking (and without toasting the rice), it would have thickened too much and it would be very sticky.
We put the casserole on the fire. Add the water, rice, salt and oil, all together. When it starts to boil, leave the rice for about 4 minutes until the water evaporates.
When we see that there are no water bubbles on the surface of the rice, we lower the heat to 3 temperatures, neither the minimum nor the medium temperature, and cover the casserole. We leave it like this for 14 minutes. It would not need more time because the grain has already softened slightly with washing, we can always try it to see if it is al dente and if not, leave it for a couple more minutes.
We uncover and taste the rice, it should be almost done. Turn off the heat and let stand with the lid on or a cotton cloth for 2 minutes. Done, now you know how to make a perfect white rice.
Tips for delicious white rice
And as I always recommend, buy a quality rice like the round SOS rice that never fails us, perfect for this recipe. A round rice that will make your job easier.
Although it is one of the most basic and easy recipes that exists, if you are just starting out in the kitchen, you may not have mastered it yet. Many people say "I don't have a hand to make rice", but with the following steps it will turn out perfect, at home we even eat rice like this for dinner, just like that.
The first thing is to choose a decent casserole, since as with the potato omelette, if you use an old frying pan in which everything sticks, it is impossible for it to turn out well. Use a good casserole whose size is commensurate with the amount of rice you prepare.
The other important part is the choice of rice, I like round bomba rice. But if you don't have much of a budget, you can use small, round grain rice, there are several on the market.
You can store this white rice in the fridge from one day to the next. Also, if you wash it with a little hot water to loosen the grains, it will be perfect for a rice salad, Cuban rice or a lot of recipes that you have on the blog.
how to cook rice in an instant pot
Cooking rice, for many, can be complicated. You may not know it, but to get the perfect rice, there are several factors to consider: the altitude of your location, the hardness of your water, and the age and dryness of the rice, to name a few.
You can ask yourself this same question with Instant Pot®, how do you make the perfect rice? The quick answer is: measure out a 1:1 ratio of water to rice, rinse the rice before adding it to the pot, and voila.
If you use to cook long grain rice, the Smart Program “Rice” will help you a lot. This setting automatically adjusts the time based on the volume of rice you add to the inner pot, so you don't have to worry about anything else.
pressure cooking
If you are using a different type of rice, select the smart “Pressure Cook” program, where you will need to adjust the cooking time according to the grain:
Time span:
- Basmati (white) rice: 4-8 minutes
- Jasmine rice: 3-5 minutes
- Brown rice (long/short): 22-28 minutes
- Wild Rice Blend: 25-30 minutes
1:1 the perfect recipe in your Instant Pot
The reason the 1:1 ratio works perfectly is that no matter what kind of rice you're using, they all need to absorb the same amount of water while cooking.
You're probably used to using a lot more water when cooking rice, but using regular pots or rice cookers lets out a ton of steam. Because the Instant Pot is a sealed pressure cooker, very little water is lost to evaporation, so you can use much less.
Most people find the 1:1 ratio produces the perfect result, but if you like your rice a little softer, you can add a little more than the recommended cup of water per cup of dry rice.
To ensure that the rice cooks evenly, it is not recommended to use less than 1 cup of water per cup of rice.
Do I have to rinse the rice first?
For this recipe, yes. Rinsing the rice not only removes some of the starch but also adds some extra water to make up for the small amount lost through evaporation.
Exactly how long do I cook the rice?
While the exact amount of water you use will depend on how you like your rice, the exact amount of time you cook it depends on your specific conditions. Think about altitude; it can make a big difference when cooking a large amount of rice. That's why we provide a range of times for different varieties of rice, so that you can select the time that's right for your dish and cook with confidence.
The goal is to stop cooking when the rice has absorbed all the water. If you open the pot, stir it, and find that there is still unabsorbed water in the inner pot, then you will need to cook it some more.
How to prevent my rice from sticking to the bottom?
To avoid this, we leave you two tips. First, it is ideal that you check that "Keep warm" is deactivated, the second, we recommend that once you make the rice, you let the steam release naturally.
Do I have to use only water to make rice?
Not necessarily. You can replace the measure of water with chicken, beef or vegetable broth, coconut milk, lemon juice, or soy sauce. You can also add some flavor enhancers like chopped cilantro or chives.
So the next time you make rice in your Instant Pot consider the 1:1 ratio of rice to water as a starting point. If it's not quite right, try adding a little more water until you find the right spot.
Now that you know how to make a bowl of perfect rice, we leave you some ideas that have it as the protagonist.
